Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to announce residents and visitors will have better access to the viewing platform at the Fraser St Telstra Tower. Council has obtained approval to extend the opening hours to seven days a week from 8am to 8pm commencing from Monday 1 April. (Note: during winter it will be closed before dark for safety reasons).
The decision to extend the opening hours from five days a week to seven days with longer hours is aimed at attracting more visitors to this great facility and was prompted by the growing amount of requests from traders, residents and visitors.
The tower has been an iconic landmark for Greater Shepparton since 1968 and stands at 76.2 metres tall with a viewing platform at 35 metres high, offering 360 degree views over the city and surrounds.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Kim O’Keeffe said it was positive seeing the community reaching out to Council and caring for the iconic tower.
“Council received great feedback from the community asking to extend the hours so more of our residents can visit the tower,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“It was a pleasure working with the community and Telstra to coordinate the expansion of the opening hours.”
Not only is the Telstra Tower iconic for our residents it is also one of the first glimpses of Shepparton visitors see when travelling to town.
“For our visitors and even those driving through town, the tower leaves a lasting impression and many come to recognise it as the Shepparton Tower,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
“Sitting in the middle of our CBD it is a great experience I encourage all visitors and residents who have not yet made the climb to have a go, you get a great view of the town including the new court house and the river lands which run through Shepparton and Mooroopna.
By extending the closing time from 3pm to 8pm will allow residents the opportunity to incorporate the climb into their fitness routines and increase their daily steps.
“There’s around 160 steps to the top, it’s a great time challenge for individuals, sporting clubs or boot camps to test their fitness with a rewarding view at the top,” Cr O’Keeffe said.
