One of Shepparton’s living legends, Murray Slee has had an enormous impact on the Greater Shepparton region and community. Murray, who was born in Stanhope in 1923, moved to Shepparton in 1937 with his family where his father secured a job as an auctioneer.
In 1956, Mr Slee was elected to the City of Shepparton’s Council and to this day remains the longest serving Councillor. He worked relentlessly for 34 years, serving his community the best way he could and leading the way as an impactful Mayor for three terms from 1976 to 1979.
In 2001, Murray was awarded the prestigious Order of Australia Medal for his outstanding service to local government and his community in Shepparton.
“Murray’s life is truly admirable. He is a man who has done so much for his community and our region is blessed to have had his guidance and support during his time as Mayor and Councillor,” Cr Sali said.
“Today we are honoured to unveil the blazer he gifted us on his 100th birthday. We have framed and displayed it proudly in the foyer outside the Council Boardroom to showcase Murray’s legacy and inspire generations to come.”
