Greater Shepparton City Council, in conjunction with West Hume Communication Access Network, Shire of Strathbogie and Moira Shire have developed the Good Access = Good Events checklist in the effort to promote an understanding of diversity in the community and support the development of inclusive communities.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson said people with disabilities — like everyone else — want to participate in community life with their family and friends.
“When hosting events within the community, it is important to ensure that all people have an equal opportunity to participate. If your event is not accessible, a significant proportion of the community could be missing out on the opportunity to feel included and experience all the wonderful events Greater Shepparton has to offer," Ms Thomson said.
"Making small changes to your planning and layout and increasing the understanding of your staff or volunteers all have the potential to increase participation. An accessible event improves the experience for all people including people with a disability, families, carers, senior citizens, parents with prams, performers and anyone carrying equipment."
