Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee achievements noted in Annual Report

The achievements of the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee were highlighted in a 2024 Annual Report noted at Greater Shepparton City Council’s September Council Meeting last week.

The Annual Report outlines what was achieved by the Committee over the past 12 months, including several successful community events, grant funding programs, heritage signage initiatives, and community education activities.

The Committee, established in 2012, acts as an advocate for all cultural heritage matters within the municipality, while providing advice to Council on how to conserve and promote the region’s heritage significance.

The 2024 Annual Report highlighted several achievements from the past year, including another successful Heritage Conservation Grants Program which saw a total of 28 funding applications, with Council awarding 10 applications worth just under $80,000.

The fifth biennial Bruce Wilson Memorial Heritage Lecture was held in 2024, with veteran local newspaperman and media owner Ross McPherson providing the lecture ‘A town talks about itself: the heritage and future of country newspapers’. The lecture involved two sessions which were both well attended, with positive feedback received by the audience.

The Committee also coordinated another successful Heritage Open Day, which included eight bus tours, seven walking tours, and thirty places of heritage interest open for independent visiting across two days, along with finalising the Heritage Plaques Pilot Program and Monash Park Signage.

The Heritage Plaques Pilot Program saw a total of 62 plaques installed across the municipality on buildings and sites within the Greater Shepparton Heritage Overlay to celebrate the region’s diverse historical built environment, and the buildings and sites that have shaped the region’s identity.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, congratulated the Committee on another successful year.

“The Heritage Advisory Committee have an important role to play in Greater Shepparton and Council value their ideas, input and guidance on matters which arise within the region,” he said.

“The Committee do a great job at ensuring our region’s cultural heritage is recognised and acknowledged within the community, with the 2024 Annual Report highlighting the quality of work  which has been achieved over the past 12 months.”

Heritage Advisory Committee Councillor Representative, Cr Fern Summer, acknowledged the great work undertaken by the Committee throughout the year.

“The Heritage Advisory Committee are a fantastic group who dedicate countless hours to achieving success in the heritage space,” she said.

“The Committee’s 2024 Annual Report shows the extent of work they achieved over the past 12 months, including several successful community events which were well attended. They all should be very proud of their achievements.”
