Council endorses pathway to rebuild Shepparton Italian Social Club building

The Shepparton Italian Social Club building, located within the Princess Park precinct, was severely damaged during the October 2022 floods and has not been usable since that time.

At Tuesday’s Meeting, Council endorsed the reinstatement of the building in principle, subject to the required planning, building and other approvals being obtained.

Under the endorsed recommendation, Council would contribute $500,000 towards the reinstatement of the building. This amount would cover all of Council’s costs to manage the project, including design, construction and administration, with the Shepparton Italian Social Club required to fund the remaining cost of reinstating the building and the site.

Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said the endorsement provides clarity and direction for the future of the building.

“Council recognises the history of the Club and the connection many people have to the building and the site. The Shepparton Italian Social Club has played an important role in bringing people together for generations,” he said.

“It has been a journey to get to this point, and Council have maintained a respectful and collaborative relationship with the Shepparton Italian Social Club to work towards a resolution. This approach provides a clear and fair framework for the reinstatement of the building, setting clear expectations around responsibilities, funding and timeframes.”

The recommendation outlines several conditions to be met, including Council to work with the Shepparton Italian Social Club on the final design and fit-out of the building. If these conditions are met, works could begin from 1 July 2028.

“The endorsed pathway clearly outlines what must be in place before any works can begin, with fair time allocated, giving certainty to Council, the club and the community about what happens next,” Cr Sali said.

“The motion put forward provides direction for reinstatement, as well as a step for resolving this matter permanently if the conditions cannot be met.”

Council will continue to work with the Shepparton Italian Social Club to progress the next steps.
