The Heritage Advisory Committee recently elected new office bearers at a meeting on 9 November for the 2015-2016 year.
The newly elected members include Chairperson Geoff Maynard, from the Toolamba and District Community Plan Steering Committee replacing inaugural Chairperson Bruce Wilson who filled the role from 2012 to 2015. Also elected were Deputy Chairperson, Marjorie Earl, from the Katandra and District History Group and Secretary Anne Tyson, from the Merrigum and District Historical Society was re-elected to the Secretary's role.
The primary purpose of the Committee is to provide the best possible advice to the Council on the best methods to conserve and promote our unique cultural heritage.
The formation of the Heritage Advisory Committee was endorsed by Greater Shepparton City Council in February 2012 to act as an advocate for all cultural heritage matters within the municipality. The Committee meets monthly and, through discussion and local knowledge, provides expert advice to Council on cultural heritage matters.
Sub-committees have been established to progress a number of programs and to further investigations. They include: developing links with tertiary institutions; strengthening links between tourism and the region’s unique cultural heritage; and investigating options for encouraging land owners to undertake conservation works to places of cultural heritage significance.
The Committee is also involved in a number of major projects within Council. They include hosting the biennial Cultural Heritage Awards and the identification of places for inclusion in the future Greater Shepparton Heritage Study Stage IIC: Rural.
