Bicycle parking loops are located where cyclists would benefit most from added parking, including near retail shops, banks, restaurants and cafes.
Council has also installed a bicycle repair station near the entrance to Aquamoves in Tom Collins Drive, Shepparton. The bicycle repair station is equipped with a bicycle tyre pump and all bicycle maintenance tools. It is designed to allow cyclists to position their bicycle conveniently above ground to carry out routine maintenance and repairs.
The installation of the bicycle repair station at Aquamoves and bicycle parking along Fryers Street is part of Council’s continued effort to promote active travel in Greater Shepparton.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said active travel encourages people to be use more physically active means like walking or cycling. It includes walking to the shops, walking children to school, cycling to work or cycling to catch public transport.
Council is progressively implementing actions from the Greater Shepparton City Council Cycling Strategy, 2013-2017 to increase the number of bicycle trips and end-of- trip facilities for cyclists within Greater Shepparton. The bicycle repair station and bicycle loops will aid Council’s efforts to encourage a shift from cars to more sustainable modes of transport.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Johann Rajaratnam, said “promoting travel by means other than by the private car is important to reducing traffic and congestion, and increasing the availability of car parking spaces.”
“It also plays a significant role in improving the health of our community by increasing incidental activity; active travel provides this opportunity.”
