Greater Shepparton City Council invites residents interested in heritage to attend a lecture presented by Louise Honman, member of the Heritage Council of Victoria, on Thursday 21 April.
The lecture ‘Jewels in the Crown – Places of the Heart’ will focus on old and new approaches to heritage practice in local communities. Ms Honman, besides sitting on the Heritage Council, is a distinguished heritage architect, consultant and advisor of long-standing, and a Director at Context Pty Ltd, a leading Victorian multi-disciplinary heritage practice.
Ms Honman has had extensive experience in assessing places of heritage importance, in writing and coordinating heritage studies, and in developing conservation management plans for buildings and sites (including that for Victoria’s Government House). She has extensive government experience including in heritage adviser roles with councils at Queenscliff, Moyne and Glenelg in regional Victoria, and developed Heritage Strategies for municipalities such as the Mt Alexander Shire.
At the forefront of current Australian thinking about heritage, Ms Honman has presented at national conferences, and written on a wide range of heritage issues. Her interests include the intersection of heritage and sustainability, and adaptive use for heritage places.
Council’s Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam suggests local residents who own property with a heritage overlay also attend the lecture.
“It will give people an insight into why it is important to conserve our heritage, what good conservation practices are and how they apply to our local area,” Mr Rajaratnam said.
All with an interest in heritage are encouraged to attend this, the first of a series of Heritage Lectures to be held biennially. The lectures will alternate with the very successful Cultural Heritage Awards, another of Council’s innovative heritage initiatives.
Chair of Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee Geoff Maynard, which proposed and planned the lecture series, said “We are holding the lecture twice, at 1pm and 6pm, to allow people who may not be able to attend during the day to come at the later time.”
There will be an opportunity to ask general questions about heritage issues.
