In Summary
- Council is considering a commemorative signage project in Lemnos to honor its historical connection to the Gallipoli campaign, with potential inclusion in the 2025/26 capital budget.
- A report presented at the October 2023 Council Meeting highlighted the relevance of the Lemnos name and explored options for memorial structures, with community engagement already initiated.
- The proposed signage, similar to that in Monash Park, would include historical information and a QR code linking to additional resources, reflecting the area's cultural significance.
- The project, estimated at $10,000, would involve collaboration with expert historians, the Heritage Advisory Committee, and the local RSL, with further details potentially available on the Council's website.
Following a Notice of Motion presented at the August 2023 Council Meeting, a report was requested to see the estimated costs of designing and erecting a memorial structure in Lemnos and to engage with the local Lemnos community on the proposed project.
At the October 2023 Council Meeting, a report was received which acknowledged the relevance of the Lemnos name and its historical link to the Gallipoli campaign. The report also noted the estimated costs and options of erecting a memorial structure and initial engagement with the community.
Earlier this year, Council Officers presented their findings on the Lemnos history to the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee (HAC). It was determined that the best outcome would be commemorative signage, like the recently installed historical signage at Monash Park, including a QR code for people to scan and gain access to additional information.
It was recommended that the signage be located in Lemnos, to provide a sense of place, which is consistent with historical signage being installed across Greater Shepparton.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, commended the idea of commemorative signage for Lemnos and acknowledged the work done behind the scenes by Council Officers.
“The Greater Shepparton City Council Officers have put in a mountain of work, dating back to this time last year, to get this project underway. The history of Lemnos is a really important part of our region and we will be proud to be able to promote the historic and cultural significance within Greater Shepparton,” he said.
“It would be great to have commemorative signage in Lemnos to provide residents and visitors with some history of the area. I look forward to this project progressing in the future.”
If the project ultimately proceeds, the wording will be developed through input from expert Lemnos historians, the HAC and the local RSL. Additional information could be placed on Council’s website with links to pictures and relevant film.
Based on the recent project to install information signage at Monash Park, it is estimated that a budget of $10,000 will be required to complete this project. The project will be considered in the 2025/26 capital budget.
