Reduced animal registration fees for January

Greater Shepparton City Council is encouraging responsible pet ownership with the introduction of discounted animal registration fees until the end of January.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizen Services Laurienne Winbanks said “this is a great way to help residents do the right thing and register their animals. If their pet does go missing it has a better chance of returning home if it is registered.”

“We hope this one-off discounted fee encourages people to register their cat or dog which is part of being a responsible pet owner.”

Whilst registering your dog or cat greatly improves their chances of being returned to you if they become lost, registration fees also provide a whole range of other important services, such as:

  • Lost and found service - a guarantee that if your pet is found wearing the council registration tag you will be notified. It is very important to keep your contact details up to date.
  • Council services to respond to calls about wandering dogs or dog attacks. This includes the removal of aggressive dogs from the streets.
  • Council services to deal with nuisance problems, eg. barking dogs
  • Council control of "Dangerous", "Menacing" and "Restricted breed" dogs in your area
  • Council monitoring of pet shops, boarding kennels, catteries, pounds, shelters and breeding and training businesses
  • A state government education program for schools in Victoria
  • State Government research into dog and cat welfare and control issues

The Council offers free registration for puppies and kittens under six months of age. It’s easy to register your dog or cat. Visit Council’s website for a Registration Form and bring it into Council for payment. Discounted registration fees will range from $5 to $40.

Annual registration fees are due in April of each year. So if you register now it will be at a reduced rate, then you will receive your annual registration fee in April.
