Greater Shepparton City Council has awarded a tender for the redevelopment of the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre at 132 Welsford Street to Moretto Building.
The Centre was established in 1939 as an Infant Welfare Centre and officially opened in 1964 as the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre which was fully utilised for several decades by a large thriving Seniors Citizens Club.
Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Neighbourhoods, Amanda Tingay, said the ongoing deterioration of the building had made the Centre an out-dated, unpleasant and unattractive venue.
“The facilities have become dank from frequent plumbing issues, lifting floor tiles, and ceiling collapse. Council has made budget provisions in previous financial years for the upgrade although these have not progressed due to a number of factors,” said Ms Tingay.
“Council committed a budget of $400,000 to undertake the redevelopment of the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre, which will ensure that the building meets future needs and community expectations for a functional, attractive facility,” she said.
The redevelopment will include an upgrade of the toilets, cosmetic improvements and enhanced accessibility. Some of the accessibility features include and an external universal access toilet; lift access to the stage, and widened door widths throughout the building; commercial kitchen works and the relocation of existing plumbing.
“It is anticipated the renovation works will commence in February and take approximately four months to complete,” said Ms Tingay.
During the renovation period the Centre will not be available for use. Alternative locations have been sourced for groups that currently use the Centre.
Immunisation sessions usually held at the Centre will be relocated to the Greater Shepparton Community Room at Riverside Plaza, Kialla until the works have been completed. The sessions are held on the first, second and fourth Thursday of every month from 9.30-10.30am.
More information on locations for immunisation is available on our website or contact Council on 5832 9700.
