Greater Shepparton City Council’s Rodney Neighbourhood Steiner Kindergarten was one of 113 schools or youth organisations to receive a 2020 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant.
The Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grants aim to assist the next generation of land carers to protect biodiversity through actions that improve and restore habitat for Victoria’s native plants and animals.
Projects include activities that provide both environmental and educational outcomes, along with health and social benefits.
Rodney Neighbourhood Steiner Kindergarten has used its grant of $1280 to purchase 10 native glider nesting boxes and 11 microbat boxes.
The children and parents and guardians at the kinder have helped assemble and paint the new boxes.
The nesting boxes will then be placed at the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton with thanks to RiverConnect to further support the local wildlife.
“The children were extremely excited to get started on their project from the minute the grant was confirmed,” Council Director Community Kaye Thomson said.
“Through building and painting the nesting boxes, the children were able to learn about local native animals and how to support native wildlife.
“Having the nesting boxes in the local gardens means the students will be able to visit the site in years to come and see how their work has impacted wildlife in our region.”
