Tatura playing host to major Victorian equine event

Greater Shepparton City Council was successful in securing the National Cutting Horse Association Victorian Futurity Cutting Horse Championships for 2014 and 2015 with this year’s event scheduled from 10-14 September at Tatura Park.

Council recently committed $625,000 in this year’s budget to the development of a new roof structure for the outdoor arena to ensure events can proceed no matter the weather.

“The funding committed by Council will greatly improve the future usability of the Tatura park arena and make it more attractive to other equine and major events. It will be interesting to see how much we can build on this year’s event when we host it again next year,” Mayor Jenny Houlihan said.

The building for the roof is expected to be completed in the 2014/15 financial year and will allow for an increase in the number of spectators and visitors to attend events in future.

The state government have also contributed to the Cutting Horse event’s success with an announcement today of $10,000 in funding for advertising the event.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Jenny Houlihan thanked the Hon Jeanette Powell for the funding which she said will assist greatly in promoting the event regionally.

Tatura Park will see over 500 competitors plus accompanying partners, families and visitors, with a large proportion from interstate, come to Tatura Park for up to a week for the five day Cutting Horse Show in September one of the biggest in Australia.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager of Investment Attraction, Geraldine Christou, said “There are massive economic benefits for the Tatura Township and the Greater Shepparton municipality. The facility will also record additional income from this booking which will flow onto local contractors and community groups, which is a fantastic outcome.”

“Tatura Park has this year experienced record income with 47 events and bookings,” said Ms Christou. “It was used for 128 days this year and we have seen a positive increase in bookings over the last five years or so hosting numerous state national and international events.”

“There were also record attendance and visitation figures with over 21,000 people and an estimated 11,000 bed nights for the region generated from major events held at the facility.”
