The Big Latch On event

The Big Latch On event was held for the third year at Eastbank on Friday 4 August at 10am. The event encouraged mothers and babies to come along for the annual event to promote breastfeeding by latching on.

The Big Latch On event has been running globally for 12 years. In 2016 more than 48,000 breastfeeding mothers and babies participated in the Big Latch On.

Mayor Dinny Adem said “this is a great event to promote breastfeeding and the importance of social networks to support breastfeeding locally. The event is also part of World Breastfeeding Week held in the first week of August.”

“If any members of community would like support or assistance with breastfeeding please contact your Maternal Child and Health Nurse, Goulburn Valley Health Breastfeeding Support Service or the Australian Breastfeeding Association,” said Cr Adem.

The Big Latch On events will be taking place all around the world, where women will gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. This event is a celebration to promote and support breastfeeding.

The event started in New Zealand by the Women’s Health Action in 2005. The event has since grown globally.

The Big Latch On was organised by Greater Shepparton City Council and the Breastfeeding Working group.
