“This event is fantastic for the people of Shepparton due to the high interest they have with music,” said Jim Gow, Project Manager at Word and Mouth. “We continue to engage young people by putting on a range of events in Greater Shepparton. Nearly weekly we hear that there is nothing to do in the area for our youth and we are constantly looking to change that.”
This event, formerly known as “The Battle of the Bands”, has a strong history, and provides a great opportunity for the musicians competing to advance to a Regional Final. Ultimately winners could play at the Push Over 2017 all-ages music festival, held on the long weekend in March in Melbourne. Word and Mouth are expecting more than 200 young people to attend again this year, with the event changing to incorporate and include a wider range of musicians.
Behind each event sits a committee of 22, aged 12-25, who are keen and dedicated to providing activities for our regional youth. ”Each activity is driven by that committee,” Mr. Gow said, “and they meet weekly to work out what the young people of Greater Shepparton need and want, giving all of their time voluntarily. This event has been in high demand since the same time last year. Music events are always very popular.”
This is a FreeZa assisted event. FReeZA is a Victorian Government program that supports young Victorians to get involved in community life by planning and running drug, smoke and alcohol-free music and cultural events for other young people.
Entry on the night is $5 for the five hours of entertainment, and all Word and Mouth events are fully supervised, and are drug, smoke and alcohol free events. No passouts are available on the night.
