WORKS UPDATE: Urban Streets Resealing Program.

Council’s annual resealing program for urban streets commenced last week with work starting in Orchard Circuit, Runge Street and Granthorne Street in Shepparton and Park Avenue in Grahamvale.

This financial year Council’s roads crews will reseal a total of 93,984 square meters at a cost of $350,000.

Rural resealing has now been completed, on time and to budget. Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said a total of 180,489 square meters of rural road was resealed at a cost of $837,611 this financial year.

“Greater Shepparton City Council has the responsibility of managing about 1200 kilometres of sealed local roads,” said Mr Bowmaker, Director Infrastructure.

“There are a number of factors that are considered as to when the road surfaces need to be resealed, including the age of the existing seal, the types and volumes of traffic, the strength of the underlying pavement, how well the road is drained, and the extent of defects on the road.”

“The bitumen wearing course seals become brittle and crack over a period of time,” he added. “So the sealed wearing courses of all that length of road surface need to be regularly replaced, as they have an important role to keep water out of the underlying pavements that the seals protect.”
