This event is a partnership between many local organizations including
Greater Shepparton City Council, RIAC, Verney Road Special School, Vision Australia, ConnectGV, Shepparton Access, Valley Sport, Mooroopna Lions Club, Primary Care Connect, FamilyCare, and Aquamoves.
This event seeks to starting a conversation and raising awareness about
disability issues in their community and highlighting examples of Disability
Champions who are working to improve the lives of people with disability in communities across Australia.
We’re also encouraging people to spread the word through social media by using #idpwd and #includeme, sharing photos of their IDPwD celebrations, and the great things that they are doing to support and create an inclusive community. We would like to demystify having a disability for members of the community and take the “Dis” out of Disability.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations (UN)
sanctioned day held each year on 3 December. It is a day that celebrates
progress in breaking down barriers, opening doors, and realizing an
inclusive society for all.
The UN theme for 2016 is ‘Achieving 17 goals for the future we want’.
This year’s theme draws attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these goals can create a more inclusive and equitable world for people with disability.
Greater Shepparton City Council and its partners have chosen to focus
on: “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.”
and “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
