Greater Shepparton City Council is partnering with Challenge Shepparton, to keep one of Australia's most iconic and longest-running long course triathlon events, back to the region on 5 April 2020 in a new time slot.
Challenge Family have reloaded and repositioned the event to align with the end of Melbourne's Summer of Triathlon. Challenge Shepparton will now be the Grand Finale of triathlons for the Victorian summer featuring Half, Olympic and Sprint Distance – and is a great way for clubs, family or friends to finish the 19/20 summer!
There is a 21-year history of triathlon in Shepparton, with Challenge Shepparton beginning in 2014 and before this a long course triathlon delivered by the Shepparton Triathlon Club for 16 years.
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Councillor Seema Abdullah said the triathlon event enhances Council’s reputation as the sporting and event capital of regional Australia.
“Greater Shepparton has a very proud history of hosting triathlon events in our region which draws visitors from right across the nation as well as some international athletes," Cr Abdullah said.
Challenge Shepparton will feature a 1.9km swim in Victoria Park Lake, a 90km bike ride through Toolamba and Mooroopna and a scenic 21.1km run along the Goulburn River.
The event will also include shorter distances with Challenge Sprint being ideal for those that want to race in a world class event without the gruelling lengths. It will feature a 500m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. There will also be an Olympic Distance and Kids Triathlon as part of the Triathlon weekend.
The event attracts a range of ages and experience along with well-known professional triathletes such as Tim Van Berkel, Annabel Luxford and Ellie Salthouse having all competed in previous editions of the Challenge Shepparton event.
“We look forward to welcoming the triathlon athletes next year to explore our region’s beautiful scenery and friendly hospitality,” Cr Abdullah added.
“Council is pleased to be again partnering with Challenge Family in 2020.’’
Online Entries for the event are now open on the Challenge Shepparton website.
The Challenge Family looks forward to again engaging the local community groups and seeing participants from a range of ages and fitness levels returning to the event in April 2020.
