New ‘Touch N Go’ parking trial

Greater Shepparton’s Touch N Go trial is being delivered in partnership with parking technology provider Orikan (the providers of PayStay), and will offer an alternative payment method for users parking in ticketed areas.

The trial aims to simplify the parking experience, with a tap-and-go system that is convenient and smartphone friendly.

15 new machines will be placed in high-traffic CBD areas, including:

  • Fryers Street (between Wyndham and Corio Street) – 3 machines
  • Corio Street (between Edward and High Street) – 3 machines
  • Maude Street (between Nixon and Vaughan Street, including the new Maude Street Precinct) – 6 machines
  • High Street (between Wyndham and Corio Street) – 3 machines

Frequently asked questions

What is PayStay?

PayStay is a mobile parking app that allows motorists to pay for parking in a secure, contact-free way.

It can display information about restrictions and tariffs in a centralised, digestible way, and the app uses a start and stop button, so you only pay for precisely the amount of time you use, rather than relying on guesswork or overpaying with coins.

How does PayStay work?

With PayStay, you can park your car without having to buy a ticket or deposit coins into a meter. Simply set up an account by downloading the PayStay app or register at paystay.com.au.

When you're ready to park, simply call up the PayStay app and check the parking area code on nearby signage.

Alternatively, you can tap a blue Touch N Go virtual meter or scan the QR code. This will bring up your PayStay app with everything ready to go, or if you do not have the app installed, take you to the PayStay Guest website where you can select the length of time you wish to park, then pay online with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard and AMEX.

What is PayStay Guest?

No PayStay app? No worries!

Pay for your parking with PayStay Guest. It’s PayStay without the bells and whistles you get with the app. Simply tap a Touch N Go virtual meter or scan the QR code on selected parking meters or signage, then follow the prompts.

The PayStay app offers the following benefits over PayStay Guest:

  • Save your payment method on-file, with auto top-up when the balance in your account drops below a defined threshold.
  • Register multiple vehicles under the one account.
  • Start and stop your parking session whenever you like, paying only for the exact time you park. With PayStay Guest you must pre-select your desired parking time.
  • Use your phone instead of a parking meter to view a timer with accurate information on when your parking will expire.
  • Opt-in to receive reminders of when your parking session is nearing its end.

What are the Touch N Go virtual meters? How are they different to traditional meters?

The Touch N Go virtual meters are new, easier way to pay for parking online securely. With a Touch N Go virtual meter you can simply tap your smart phone to pay for parking online without having to insert or swipe your debit or credit card.

Note: You cannot pay for parking at Touch N Go virtual meters by tapping your debit or credit card. Touch N Go virtual meters only interact with the PayStay app on your device, or the PayStay Guest website to allow you to pay online.

The virtual meters use NFC (near field communication) technology. This is the same wireless communication technology used when you ‘tap’ your phone to pay for something at a checkout, however the virtual meters cannot connect to your bank account the way your payment cards or online banking apps can.

As long as your smart phone is NFC enabled (i.e. it supports wireless payments via EFTPOS), then you can simply tap your phone to easily start a parking session with PayStay.

And if you don’t have an NFC enabled phone, no problems! You can scan also the posted QR code with your phone and follow the prompts instead.

How do I pay using the Touch N Go virtual meters?

It’s easy. Simply tap the meter with an NFC-enabled smart phone and follow the prompts on screen. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code and follow the prompts on your mobile phone screen.

When you tap your phone or use the QR code, PayStay will automatically open for you. If you're a registered PayStay app user, the PayStay app will open. If you don't have the app, the PayStay Guest website will open instead.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Tap and hold your smartphone on the box or scan the QR code.
  2. Wait for your phone to show the PayStay website link and then click to open the link.
  3. If you’re a registered PayStay app user, the app will open with all the details of your parking location good to go. Just click ‘Start Parking’ to begin your parking session.
  4. If you’re NOT a registered PayStay app user, the PayStay Guest website will open:
    1. Enter your number plate, state and mobile number and press ‘Continue’.
    2. Choose your desired parking time.
    3. Choose your payment method. You can use your digital wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay) or enter the details of your debit/credit card (Visa, Mastercard or AMEX).
    4. Confirm the payment.
    5. Your screen will display ‘Payment Summary’.
  5. That’s it; you’re all done!

Do I have be a registered PayStay app user to pay using the Touch N Go virtual meters?

No, you don’t have to be a registered PayStay app user to use the virtual meters. That's the beauty of PayStay Guest.

When you either tap your phone or use the QR code on the virtual meter, PayStay will automatically open for you. If you're a registered PayStay app user, the PayStay app will open. If you don’t have the app, the PayStay Guest website will open instead. Either way, you can easily start a parking session right from your phone.

You only need be registered with PayStay to use the PayStay app.

I’m parked near a traditional coin meter. Is there a way I can use PayStay or PayStay Guest there instead of using cash to pay?

Yes. Look out for the QR code on the traditional parking meters.

You can scan the QR code on traditional meters to automatically open PayStay or PayStay Guest on your phone. Another benefit of paying this way with PayStay instead of the traditional coin meter is that you can choose to only pay for the exact amount of time you park.

Do I have to be registered to use the PayStay app?

PayStay app users must be registered. You can register via the PayStay app, available from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Alternatively, you can create an account at paystay.com.au/createaccount. You can also register through the PayStay Customer Service by calling 1300 322 111.

Payment without the requirement to register is available using the PayStay Guest feature, when tap a Touch N Go virtual meter or you scan the QR code on Touch N Go or traditional parking meters.

Do I have to be registered to use PayStay Guest?

You do not need to be registered to use PayStay Guest. Simply scan the QR code on selected parking meters or tap a Touch N Go virtual meter.

What payment methods does PayStay and PayStay Guest accept?

You can pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Visa, Mastercard and AMEX Including Click to Pay.

What are the benefits of using PayStay?

If you use the PayStay app, you can start and stop your parking session, paying only for the exact time you park. This helps reduce the fee compared to a traditional meter. With the PayStay app you can also:

  • Find which areas have more available parking spaces
  • Use your phone instead of a parking meter and view a timer with accurate information on when your parking will expire
  • Choose to receive reminders of when your parking session will end
