They were energetic and committed, and outraged by the tyranny of a system that excluded them from politics and power. What kind of women were the suffragettes? How did their own lives play out against this monumental achievement of winning the vote in 1902 for white women.

Clare Wright, in conversation with Alana Johnson, talks about her latest book "You Daughters of Freedom" telling the story of that victory and of Australia’s role in the subsequent international struggle, bringing to life a time when Australian democracy was the envy of the world and the standard bearer for the progress in a shining new century.

Dr Clare Wright is an award-winning historian, author, broadcaster and public commentator who has worked in politics, academia and the media. Clare holds a PhD in Australian Studies from the University of Melbourne and an MA in Public History from Monash University and is currently an Associate Professor of History at La Trobe University. The best-selling second book in her Democracy Trilogy, "You Daughters of Freedom," which followed the 2013 Stella Prize winning "The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka," was published in October 2018.

Clare hosts the ABC Radio National history series/podcast, Shooting the Past, and co-hosts the forthcoming LTU podcast Archive Fever.
