Ukraine-Russia crisis explained by Professor of history

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been front-page news. The Shepparton Library invites you to a talk by Professor Darius von Güttner as he explains the background to the current crisis, including a long history of conflict and annexation.

Professor von Güttner, an Adjunct Professor at both Melbourne and La Trobe Universities, is an expert on the history of East Central Europe. He will be at the Shepparton Library on Tuesday March 29th at 6pm. He will delve into both the shared and divergent history of the region and, influences from other parts of the world upon the region.

Darius, based in Shepparton, currently works as both teacher and researcher. He is an historian of East Central Europe with a particular interest in cultural aspects of transmission of ideas and identity. His research and teaching examines history from a global perspective. He is a highly respected author, with his publications covering diverse aspects of history from the Middle Ages to modern eras. He will be familiar to many due to his regular guest spot on ABC radio with Matt Dowling.

Winston Churchill famously said “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

If you would like to learn more about the current conflict, and the history of this region join Professor von Guttner on 29th March. This is a free event, but bookings are required. Visitors to the Shepparton Library will be asked to show proof of full vaccination or a medical exemption.
