An Action Plan has been developed for the Greater Shepparton LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee to help drive future activities and community practices across Greater Shepparton City Council.
The 2022-2025 Action Plan addresses the theme of ‘leave no one behind’ within the Council Plan 2021-2025, and follows the establishment of the committee in August last year. The committee was formed to provide a platform for advocacy and representation for the LGBTIQA+ community and to support and inform future Council directions relating to representation, decision making and inclusive practices.
The inaugural Action Plan operates under the three key priorities of advice, celebration and advocacy, and inclusion and connection, and was developed through a number of facilitated sessions with a consultant from the LGBTIQA+ sector.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali said the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee was one of many committees Council had formed.
“This Advisory Committee adds to the growing list of committees Council has established to provide a platform for community to provide knowledge, advice and information which can also contribute to future Council decisions,” he said.
At the August Council Meeting, Cr Fern Summer was appointed as Councillor representative and Chair to the Advisory Committee. Cr Summer will lead the monthly meetings.
“I am pleased to sit on the Advisory Committee which provides a platform for advocacy and representation for LGBTIQA+ communities,” Cr Summer said.
“It also provides an avenue for greater engagement between Council and LGBTIQA+ community members, strengthening Council’s commitment in creating an inclusive environment.”
