Camera network nearing completion

Work on the Safer City Camera Project is nearing completion with electrical contractors currently installing cameras which should be finished within a month.

The contractors have completed the underground drilling for the installation of the wiring and cables in Maude, Fryers and High Streets.

Mayor Jenny Houlihan said "through the drilling works, contractors had a few surprises finding cables that were not included on any of the drawings. This does occur when dealing with old underground infrastructure but it set the completion date back by a few weeks."

"Contractors are now working to finalise power and fibre optic connections for the cameras."

"I am really looking forward to having the cameras operational. This is something the community has asked Council to put into place and it will soon come to fruition after a lot of planning and organising."

The Safer City Camera Project is part of the Safer City Strategy 2011-2014. The program is designed to reduce antisocial and criminal behaviour and improve public perceptions of safety in Shepparton's CBD.

Greater Shepparton City Council is working with Victoria Police to ensure compliance with all privacy and legal regulations are covered when the cameras are installed.

Greater Shepparton City Council, the Department of Justice and the Attorney General's Department have all contributed funding towards the Safer City Camera project.
