Celebrate National Tree Day with Greater Shepparton City Council and RiverConnect

Greater Shepparton City Council and RiverConnect would like to invite the Greater Shepparton community to connect with nature this National Tree Day, Sunday 31 July 2022

National Tree Day was founded in 1996 and has since grown into Australia's largest community tree planting and nature protection event.

National Tree Day is a call to action for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to their community. Each year, around 300,000 people volunteer their time to engage in environmental activities that educate individuals about the world around them. Since its launch in 1996 there has been 26 million trees planted across Australia, with five million volunteers donating a total of 10 million hours.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Shane Sali said “Covid restrictions have prevented our community in taking part in National Tree Day over the last couple of years. I am pleased that we are now able to continue the efforts our community has made with the One Tree Per Child program and recently reaching 100,000 trees planted.”

“This is an event that the whole family can take part in, planting Indigenous plants to improve our environment and provide habitat for wildlife.” said Cr Sali.

“Australians understand they can make a personal difference through positive environmental action and National Tree Day provides a fantastic opportunity for them to do just that,” said Planet Ark co-CEO Rebecca Gilling.

“There are clear benefits to spending time in nature and by planting a tree you can help cool the climate, provide homes for native wildlife, and make your community a better place to live.”

Greater Shepparton’s free community planting day will be held at 22 Huggard Drive, Mooroopna from 10am until 12pm on Sunday 31 July. Participants will need to register via bit.ly/TreeDay2022 Residents are also invited to join a free barbecue lunch after the planting concludes at midday.

It's a day to venture outdoors and get to know your community, and most importantly, to have fun.
