The Greater Shepparton community shaped the future of the region by planting an incredible 1150 new trees at the National Tree Day community planting session on Sunday 28 July.
National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree planting event with 300,000 people nation-wide volunteering their time to engage in environmental activities.
In total, 174 people got their hands dirty at the planting session at KidsTown.
Council also gave away another 350 plants to children who were encouraged to head home and plant their new tree, taking the new tree count to 1500.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou, thanked all those who took the time to get involved.
“We had an original goal to plant 750 trees for the day, so to plant 1150 and send another 350 away with residents is an amazing effort,” she said.
“The day was so well coordinated, and everyone that attended was obviously having a great time immersing themselves in the experience - the smiles on the children‘s faces were priceless.
“Community sessions like this wouldn’t be possible without locals who are willing to get involved and get their hands dirty. I’d also like to thank all the volunteers and staff who were involved in putting on a great day.”
National Tree Day is in conjunction with the One Tree Per Child program. The aim of One Tree Per Child is to plant 22,000 plants in the region in 2019.The 1500 plants planted by Greater Shepparton residents on National Tree Day will help to reach this target.
