Council to host ‘how to’ session for election hopefuls

Greater Shepparton will host a public information session for residents considering standing for council in the upcoming elections.

Greater Shepparton City Council Chief Executive Officer, Peter Harriott said that standing for council is a relatively simple process, but can be daunting if you’re not certain what is required or how to nominate and campaign.

“The information session will outline the roles and responsibilities of a councillor, describe the election process, and provide useful advice for getting elected.

“I strongly encourage any residents contemplating standing for election to attend this information session,” said Mr Harriott.

The information session for prospective candidates in the general elections for Greater Shepparton will be held on Thursday 21 July 2016 from 7pm at the Council office, 90 Welsford Street, Shepparton.

Speakers from neighbouring councils, and the Municipal Association of Victoria will provide information about the council area, and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor.

A video presentation with councillors from other municipalities will assist prospective candidates to gain an understanding of what the public will expect of you as a councillor, time commitments, challenges and rewards.

The free session will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions.
