Greater Shepparton City Council has developed a draft Mobility and Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan, and is now seeking community feedback to ensure the plan aligns with residents’ needs and priorities.
In Summary
The plan was developed to help identify issues and opportunities for improvement, plan and prioritise work, and meet the road safety needs of the community. By now seeking community feedback, Council aims to help create a safer, more accessible, and sustainable road and transport network.
The draft plan is available to view and provide feedback via the Shaping Greater Shepp website from now until Monday 3 March 2025.
Mayor, Councillor Shane Sali, said community feedback would help Council finalise the strategy to better serve everyone who lives, works, and travels in Greater Shepparton.
“Council’s vision is to ensure that anyone who travels throughout Greater Shepparton, arrives at their destination safely,” he said.
“Aligned with the National Road Safety Strategy and Victorian Road Safety Strategy, Council’s goal is to achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2050, with an interim target of halving road deaths by 2030.”
The Draft Strategy and Action Plan aims to achieve this goal by the use of The Safe System – Safer Roads, Safer Speeds, Safer Vehicles, Safer Road Users. By using evidence based, innovative solutions, Council hopes to promote sustainable and active transport.
In compiling the draft plan, Council undertook initial community consultation in 2024 to gather feedback. This involved face-to-face consultation workshops with key stakeholders and the community, and a public online survey for residents to express their views on road safety in Greater Shepparton, with 291 responses received. This community feedback identified several priority areas which have been included in the draft document, including:
“This initial consultation helped Council identify what the community prioritises in regards to road safety, mobility and accessibility within Greater Shepparton and was extremely valuable in helping shape the draft plan,” Cr Sali said.
“Road safety affects us all, so I encourage all community members to have a read of the Draft Strategy and Action Plan and provide their feedback before the closing date.”
Feedback closes at midnight on Monday 3 March 2025. Once the feedback has been considered, the Draft Mobility and Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2029 will then be presented for adoption at the April Council Meeting.
