Work has commenced on the Murchison Box Ironbark Rail Trail. The trail runs from Impey Street to Channel Inlet Road at the municipality boundary.
The trail will be used by pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. The trail winds its way along the old railway reserve, past Doctor's Swamp. Doctor's Swamp is an important local wet land featuring red gums and grey box trees, kangaroos and a multitude of bird-life, including brolgas.
The local Murchison community approached Greater Shepparton City council with a proposal to develop the trail. Completion of the Rail Trail was a high priority identified after extensive community consultation during the development of the Murchison Community Plan 2011
Mayor Jenny Houlihan said this was an exciting project for Murchison.
"This project will provide economic, health and wellbeing, tourist and education benefits to Murchison," Cr Houlihan said.
Chair of the Murchison Community Plan Steering Committee Tim Linton said the group had worked hard to see this project to fruition.
"It is fantastic to finally see this worthwhile project commencing."
A "Friends of the Ironbark Rail Trail" group will be established and community members are invited to participate. The group will assist with the maintenance, revegetation and future fundraising opportunities.
For further information on the "Friends of the Ironbark Rail Trail" please contact Tim Linton on timlinton11@gmail.com or Greater Shepparton City Council (03) 5832 9700.
The trail is a joint project of Murchison Community Plan Steering Committee, Regional Development Victoria and Greater Shepparton City Council.
