An exciting project for an upgrade of the recreational path network will commence this week providing additional opportunities for the community to experience more of our riverine and bush environment.
This project is an upgrade of an existing culturally significant track on the floodplain known as The Flats, adjacent to the Peter Ross Edwards causeway near Mooroopna.
The Flats became home to many after the Walk Off from Cummeragunja at Barmah on 4 February 1939. The particular site at ‘The Flats’ was chosen as the Yorta Yorta had an extended traditional association with the environments in close proximity to rivers such as the Kaiela (Goulburn River). ‘The Flats’ was also home to some Aboriginal families prior to the Walk Off.[1]
The upgrade will formalise the track with an environmentally friendly crushed concrete surface making it more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians. The track will be accompanied by new signage on the Shared Path between Shepparton and Mooroopna to mark its location.
The upgrade to the track provides more opportunity for attracting the growing accessible tourism market. The upgrade of the path network also provides opportunities for active living and the promotion of Shepparton as a great cycling destination for visitors and tourists.
The project is part of the RiverConnect program with funding from external bodies. Works commence on 4 June and should be completed by 30 June, dependent on weather.
Please note: The path will be closed during the works.
