The annual Super Tuesday Count was held on Tuesday 2 March 2021 from 7-9am to count the number of cyclists in Greater Shepparton during the morning peak.
It was undertaken by local volunteers, engaged by the Bicycle Network, at 21 sites across Greater Shepparton. The Count records volumes, gender and movement flow of people on bicycles during this time at these sites.
The Bicycle Network, a national not-for-profit organisation, seeks to promote active transport across the country. The Super Tuesday Count is the largest annual commuter count in Australia.
Greater Shepparton City Council has participated since 2011 and is supportive of ways of realising modal shift to bicycles. Greater Shepparton’s flat topography lends itself well to cycling both for commuter and recreational users.
The results from 2020 counted a total of 505 movements during the two-hour survey, which is an increase of 24 per cent compared to the results of the previous year. The results for 2021 will be available in May.
COVID-19 has seen a renewed interest in the uptake on cycling in Greater Shepparton as a safe, cost-effective and convenient means of exercise and getting around while maintaining social distancing and avoiding road traffic. Council will continue to support the development of cycling within the municipality as an alternative mode of transport.
The Super Tuesday Count provides raw data which is critical to informing Council documents and policy to realise new or improved infrastructure required to increase the uptake of cycling across Greater Shepparton. This includes Council’s 10-year capital works program that will ultimately construct the majority of any new on-road bike lanes and shared paths, and supporting infrastructure.
