The Steller Victorian Open is set to call Shepparton home after Bowls Victoria and the Greater Shepparton City Council announced a new agreement that will see Victoria’s premier bowls tournament stay in the Goulburn Valley Region for the next three years.
As Victoria’s largest bowls tournament, the event sees close to 2000 domestic and international bowlers descend on regional Victoria for eight days of competition.
Graeme Bridge, Chief Executive of Bowls Victoria, is delighted the association’s top event will remain in country Victoria.
"We are delighted that the Greater Shepparton City Council has continued their generous support of the Victorian Open. An event like this provides a wonderful opportunity to support regional Victoria and showcase our sport."
The Mayor of Greater Shepparton, Kim O'Keeffe, is equally pleased to see the Steller Victorian Open return to the region in 2018, 2019 and 2020.
“Our relationship with Bowls Victoria is going from strength to strength. They are a wonderful organisation to work with and we look forward to welcoming participants, families and supporters to not only enjoy our state of the art bowls facility but our diverse region,” said Cr O’Keeffe.
“Hosting this event over 8 days will further enhance our reputation as a leading sporting destination, helping keep local businesses busy and the economy strong.”
Open to both Men and Women, the Steller Victorian Open provides a unique opportunity for every level of bowler to challenge themselves and their fellow competitors in a professional environment.
Matches, which features Singles, Pairs and Triples for both men and women, and Mixed Pairs, will be played at various venues throughout the Greater Shepparton region. Shepparton Park Bowls Club will be the headquarters, host club, and finals venue for the tournament.
Bowlers will be playing for a slice of a $50,000 prize-purse. As well as the seven titles up for grabs, the Vic Medal will be awarded to the best-performing bowler of the tournament who accumulates the most points across the event’s four disciplines.
The 2018 Steller Victorian Open will be held in the Greater Shepparton region from November 16 to 23, 2018. There is no pre-qualification and the event is open to bowlers from anywhere around the world. It is also a Bowls Australia ranked event.
