Try something new during This Girl Can Week

Women in Greater Shepparton are being encouraged to try something new and get active as part of VicHealth’s This Girl Can Week kicking off on Monday 23 March.

This Girl Can Week (23-29 March 2020) aims to encourage more women to give physical activity a go, or return to exercise after a break.

Greater Shepparton City Council has been provided with a $15,000 VicHealth grant to promote This Girl Can – Victoria and the week within the community. Council is partnering with gyms and sports clubs within Greater Shepparton to provide a range of fun, free or low-cost activities tailored to women and girls who want to get active but aren’t sure about how to take the first step.

“This Girl Can – Victoria has had real success in building a supportive community of women who encourage each other to get out there and get active,” Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah said.

“Greater Shepparton is proud to work with VicHealth during This Girl Can Week to encourage local women and girls to smash the stereotypes holding them back from getting active and having a go.

“I encourage women and girls to get involved in the local events taking place and show that in Greater Shepparton this girl definitely can!”

“There’ll be a range of fun and inclusive activities locally for women to get involved in across March and April with a sports expo on 5 April that will help women take that first and often daunting step to being active.”

To coincide with This Girl Can Week, VicHealth has recently launched a new TV ad  which aims to show that getting active is for all women – not just those with a six-pack and the latest activewear.

Featuring everyday women from right across Victoria, such as body-positive personal trainer Natasha Korbut and amputee swimmer Karen Veldhuizen, the new ad encourages women to focus on how getting active makes them feel rather than what they look like.

VicHealth Head of This Girl Can Melanie Fineberg said This Girl Can Week was about offering fantastic opportunities for women be active in their local community without feeling judged.

“This Girl Can – Victoria empowers women to get active – no matter how sweaty they get, how red their face is or how good they are. We want women to have fun when they’re being active rather than worrying about what they look like or a number on the scales,” Ms Fineberg said.

“This is about celebrating how getting active makes us feel – whether it’s the fun of playing in a team, the calm of yoga or the joy of diving in the water. Activities during This Girl Can Week will be inclusive, non-judgemental and accessible for women of different ages, body shapes and abilities.
