Women’s Charter Advisory Committee seeking committee members

The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee (GSWCAC) is calling for nominations from local residents to fill vacant positions on the committee.

The GSWCAC consists of community members and representatives from Greater Shepparton City Council, including a Councillor as the Charter Champion.

The volunteer committee acts as a strategic advisory committee to Council, aiming to promote women in leadership and decision-making. A three-point action plan focussing on Gender Equity, Diversity and Active Citizenship guides the strategic objectives of the committee.

The committee is active in the community, and in partnership with other organisations has achieved:

  • Events to mark the significance of International Women’s Day
  • Awarded recognition to a member of the community or organisation via the annual GSWCAC Women’s Award
  • Provided a scholarship for Kaiela Arts
  • Delivered training

Council Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah encouraged members of the community to apply.

“The GSWCAC is committed and passionate about making a difference for women,” Cr Abdullah said.

“Being a part of the committee is rewarding; striving to achieve gender equity, active participation of women and diversity of representation and participation at all levels of community and organisation. Additionally it can also help individuals gain various other skills in areas such as problem solving, leadership and teamwork.”

Charter Champion, Cr Kim O’Keeffe, said the committee is driven to create better opportunities for women in Greater Shepparton.

“As Charter Champion, I have been blown away with the incredible work the GSWCAC does,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

“One of the key principles of the GSWCAC is diversity, so the committee aims to have membership that reflects the diverse community of Greater Shepparton. It is important that the voices of women as well as men are heard regarding the opportunities and issues affecting women in Greater Shepparton.”
