Renovations to the interior of the Senior Citizens Centre in Welsford Street, Shepparton are complete with the Centre now available for use.
The four month renovation work fixed a number of issues with the 76 year old building including deteriorating plumbing, lifting floor tiles and a collapsing ceiling.
Greater Shepparton City Council committed $400,000 in the 2014/15 budget to undertake the redevelopment to ensure the building meets future needs and community expectations for a functional, attractive facility.
Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Neighbourhoods, Amanda Tingay says the internal toilets were upgraded, accessibility throughout the centre was improved with lift access to the stage and wider door widths.
“We also installed a commercial kitchen providing an opportunity for activities and events to be catered for as well as a cosmetic works such as painting and floor coverings,” said Ms Tingay.
“The whole building looks fresher but most importantly it is now safe for use and should see many more years’ service as a community hub for our community.”
The Centre is predominately used by the Senior Citizens group and is also the venue for immunisation sessions and other community activities. “We would like to encourage community groups to utilise the facility for their events or activities. If anyone would like to have a look at the Centre and the facilities on offer they can ring the Council for more information.”
The Centre was established in 1939 as an Infant Welfare Centre and officially opened in 1964 as the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre which has been fully utilised for several decades by the Seniors Citizens Club.
