Our Towns

While the city of Shepparton sits at the heart of the municipality of Greater Shepparton, there are many wonderful towns and communities that contribute to the region's reputation for diversity and culture.

Shepparton

Shepparton is one of the most progressive provincial cities in regional Australia. At the heart of the municipality of Greater Shepparton, the city is growing at a rapid rate.

A range of industries are based here including fruit processing. SPC Ardmona is a giant of the fruit industry and has been central to the success and growth of the region for many years.

The city draws shoppers and visitors from across northern Victoria and southern New South Wales.

Shepparton is the home of SPC Ardmona Factory Sales - a warehouse selling everything from canned fruits and tomato products to baked beans and spaghetti in bulk and at vastly reduced prices. Thousands of visitors flock to Shepparton each year to snare a bargain and with daily specials you are guaranteed to save.

Mooroopna

Situated just across the causeway from Shepparton, Mooroopna has an identity all of its own. Known as the Fruit Salad City, Mooroopna is nestled amongst orchards familiar to the region.

Located between Mooroopna and Shepparton, Gemmills Swamp is a wildlife reserve that encompasses 170 hectares of Red Gum floodplain forest and Tall Spike Rush wetlands. It is not uncommon to see a breathtaking array of pelicans, ibis, swans, egrets and ducks habituating in and around Gemmills Swamp as it provides a unique and diverse environment.

Tatura

Often known as water wheel country, Tatura is home to Tatura Milk Industries, Snow Brand and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. Tatura is steeped in history, with seven Prisoner of War Camps in operation around the district during World War II. The German War Cemetery and one of the most significant war time museums in Victoria are located in Tatura, depicting the cultural history through photographs, memorabilia, artefacts, intelligence reports and newspaper articles.

Tatura also hosts many of Greater Shepparton's major events, from the well-known food and wine festival, The Taste of Tatura in March, to International Dairy Week in January, the Tatura Cup in April and Italian Plate Day in December.

Murchison

Murchison is a small community full of character and charm situated on the banks of the Goulburn River, 35 kilometres south of Shepparton. Known as the "River Bank Garden Town", the serenity and friendliness of Murchison is a pleasure to experience.

Murchison is well known for its Vazzoler cheese and wine varieties courtesy of Murchison Wines. Dig deeper and you will discover Murchison has been witness to a rich tapestry of monumental historical events.

Dookie

Dookie is located about 30 kilometres from Shepparton, in the Dookie hills. It is a progressive community, recognised for its unique and vibrant distinctive natural features, agricultural production, educational campus and an emerging tourism industry.

Historic Mt Major and Mt Saddleback are prominent features of the landscape, as are the rich red volcanic soil, historic buildings and other natural features including a river, creeks and box iron bark forest.

The fertile agricultural land is perfect for the traditional farming pursuits of grain and cereals, dairy and more recently a number of vineyards, olive groves and a lavender farm.
