What does Greater Shepparton City Council do?
Greater Shepparton City Council is a local government authority that takes care of the city or town where you live, called a municipality. There are three levels of government, local level (Greater Shepparton), state level (Victoria) and federal level (Australia).
Council provides services, programs and community facilities for the people who live here.
Some of our services include:
- waste collection and recycling
- centres for child health and immunisation
- kindergartens
- pre-school care and after-school care for children
- youth services
- services for older people who need care at home
- maintenance of the house and meals on wheels for the elderly
- registration of pets
- playgrounds and parks
- roads and footpaths
- pools and gyms
The role of councillors
In Greater Shepparton there are nine councillors who are elected for a period of four years by the people who live in Greater Shepparton. The Mayor is the spokesperson for the Councillors and is elected for one year term by the other councillors.
The councillors play a key role in planning for the future of our city and make decisions on what to do. As elected representatives of the community they establish priorities and determine strategic direction.
Vote in elections
If you have moved from another municipality or if you are new Australian citizens, it is likely that you are not registered to vote in local government elections for Greater Shepparton. You will need to transfer your name on the electoral register of the municipality of the Greater Shepparton by contacting the Victorian Electoral Commission on 131 832 or www.vec.vic.gov.au
