Food is about so much more than what we eat. Food is at the heart of culture, family and community. Food tells stories of our ancestors, of who we are now, and through sharing food together, we connect across cultures and generations.

  • Ane's Tongan Kitchen  Get Tickets
    13 May 2022 at 6.30pm - 9pm
    Dress up for a fine dining experience that traces Ane Fotu’s culinary journey from the traditional Tongan kitchen where she grew up and learned to cook with her mother, all the way to Shepparton where she is now raising her own family. Ane has collaborated with Mitchellton Winery head chef Vinnie Callaghan to reinterpret some of her favourite childhood dishes originating in the Kingdom of Tonga. She will serve these up in a three-course dinner along with story and traditional Tongan dance in this intimate, long-table dinner event.

    Call it curry puff, karipap or 咖哩角, this is a much-loved snack you will find at every turn and corner throughout Malaysia. Learn how to make these delicious little parcels of flakey and crispy pastry filled with savoury curried potatoes, chicken and onion. Curry puffs take some time and energy to prepare, making them the perfect food for a collective cooking and eating experience like this one led by Yusniza Yusoff.

    Inspired by her transglobal upbringing and ancestral roots, Ree Peric will lead a journey from the Island of Fiji to Uganda in central Africa, landing in Shepparton. Guests will be welcomed with a traditional kava ceremony followed by a meal of tasty, traditional dishes drawn from Ree’s childhood in Uganda. Bringing it home, she will screen a series of short videos that take a peek into the kitchens of some of her friends and family living here in Shepparton.

    Forget the corporate culture of grab-and-go coffee and learn the art of unhurried, slow, social sipping. Idle the afternoon away with a guhwah, traditional East African coffee ceremony hosted by Agoness Kuol. The coffee ceremony is a core cultural tradition throughout East Africa that is practised daily, giving friends, family and visitors a chance to sit, relax and catch up. Agoness adds her own flavour with a bit of lively Sudanese music and dance thrown in at the end to work off the delicious sweets she’ll be serving.

    Afghan culture is all about hospitality and generosity - food is the currency of kindness, love, collaboration and unity. In Afghanistan, meals are a ritual combining family, friends and culture. Food is eaten together and given the amount of work taken to create an Afghan feast, cooking is also done communally. Join Shakilla Naveed in her makeshift outdoor kitchen to share in creating and eating delicious, healthy homestyle Afghan dishes like aash and biryani - made with love!

Celebrating two years of working together, the women of the Shepparton Culture Kitchen offer this special opportunity for community to share in a diversity of flavours, stories and food cultures over two days at St. Paul’s African House on 13- 14 May 2022.

Drawing on their own stories, cultures, traditions and contemporary influences, the women including Ane Fotu, Ree Peric, Shakilla Naveed, Eman Alabbassi, Yusniza Yusoff, Leaisa Pele and Agoness Kuol, have collaborated with artist Jamie Lewis, to explore and exchange food cultures and to develop this special program of participatory cooking, eating, storytelling and food culture experiences.

The program will include screenings of the Shepparton Culture Kitchen digital stories created by local visual artist Mimi Leung. Featuring the Shepparton Culture Kitchen women, these short films beautifully capture their perspectives and explore the role that food plays for them in all aspects of health, including mental, emotional, familial and community.

Produced by MAV, Greater Shepparton City Council and Point of Difference Studio, Shepparton Culture Kitchen is one of 4 initiatives supported through VicHealth’s Art of Good Health program.

Drawing on Shepparton’s identity as Victoria’s ‘food bowl’ and most culturally diverse regional town, Shepparton Culture Kitchen is a significant arts program that centres the voices of diverse local women living in diaspora, to reimagine a future in which our communities are connected through empowering, healthy and sustainable food cultures.
