Council is pleased to advise that the Balaclava / Verney / New Dookie Roads / Hawdon Street intersection is now fully open to traffic with the works completed ahead of schedule.
The new traffic signals were turned on today and traffic can now flow in all four directions through the intersection.
The intersection has been converted from a roundabout to a signalised intersection with new road pavement across four lanes of traffic on each leg of the intersection and new shared paths to improve pedestrian and cyclist access. Other works completed as part of the upgrade project include water main and other service relocations to allow the installation of the indented parking.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare said “this was an important project to improve traffic movement to meet current and future needs at this location. The intersection is now better able to provide for the future growth in residential areas to the north, industrial development to the east and the future opening of the Greater Shepparton Secondary College to the south.
“Council appreciates the community’s ongoing support during the works. We are pleased we could deliver this major project for the community ahead of schedule,” said Mr Hoare.
The $5.5 million dollar project was co-funded by the Australian Federal Government - Roads to Recovery $600,000 and Shepparton Alternative Route Scheme $1.25 million, Regional Roads Victoria Fixing Country Roads grant for $1.07 million, Goulburn Valley Water contributions of $700,000 and Greater Shepparton City Council contribution of $1.88 million.
Thank you to all the businesses and residents in the area for their patience, cooperation and for working with Council throughout the project.
