International Day People with Disability is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally. The day celebrates progress in breaking down barriers, opening doors and realizing an inclusive society for all and celebrates the achievements and contributions of people with disability.
The event also offers a number of all abilities activities, including wheelchair basketball, all abilities AFL football demonstration and drills, musical performances, Taekwondo and a free bbq cooked by Mooroopna Lions Club, with additional food provided by Lutfiyes Shish Kebab.
Attendees will also hear from guest speaker Janet Gill Kirkman who has many years experience in education and is currently Liaison Principal at Verney Road Special School.
Council’s Director Community Kaye Thomson said International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), is a day dedicated to placing greater emphasis on the celebration of abilities and achievements of people living with disability.
“It’s a great opportunity for bringing together individuals, businesses and community organisations to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability,” Ms Thomson said.
“I encourage individuals and organisations to come along and celebrate this important day.”
This event is a partnership between many local organisations including Council, RIAC, Verney Road Special School, Vision Australia, ConnectGV, Shepparton Access, Valley Sport, Mooroopna Lions Club, Department Human Services (DHS), FamilyCare, Word and Mouth and Aquamoves.
Greater Shepparton’s International Day of People with Disability celebration will be held in the Queens Gardens from 11am-2pm.

Profile – Janet Gill Kirkman
Janet is an experienced principal who led Gowrie St Primary School in Shepparton for seven years from 2001 - 2008. Janet has a Masters of Leadership with a Literacy specialism. In 2008 became a Regional Principal responsible for large groups of schools firstly in the Seymour, Benalla area and then in the Greater Shepparton area. Now as a Liaison Principal she has lead Verney Road Special School since 2013.
