Documenting our unique dining experiences

Greater Shepparton City Council is seeking input from all local eateries in the municipality to develop a publication that details our food trade and the stories behind them.

Greater Shepparton is full of amazing food establishments from all over the world and those that use local produce in their restaurants and cafes.

Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Manager Neighbourhoods Jason Watts said the Council is really keen to gather as much information as possible about the eating around the region no matter what type of food they serve.

“We want to find out the stories behind older and newer establishments that offer a unique dining experience or taste of our culture and other cultures from around the world,” said Mr Watts. “It’s not necessarily about the best restaurants or fine dining, it’s about digging deep and finding out how that business came to be, how long they have been in business, what type of food they serve and what makes them unique.”

“We know there are some really interesting stories out there from our newest arrivals right back to the local fish and chip shop that’s been around for years. We are also interested in hearing from people who use our local produce including bush tucker,” said Mr Watts.

“After all, we are Victoria’s food bowl, with 25 per cent of Victoria’s agriculture generated here and our region enjoys significant Aboriginal cultural, spiritual and historical heritage. We also have a long history of migration beginning post war from European countries, when Shepparton’s population tripled and so did our food industry,” he said.

“It would be really good to let the rest of Australia know how good our food is here but we do need your help.
