The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee invites everyone to this year’s International Women’s Day event on Thursday, 7 March.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, the committee has organised a free event at the Sir Ian McLennan Centre in Echuca Road, Mooroopna.
The global theme for International Women’s Day in 2019 is #BalanceforBetter – a call to action for driving gender balance across the world.
The evening of celebration, conversation and performance is open to the entire community and bookings are essential.
Two local women, Christina Vithoulkas and Dr Remi Kehinde, will guest speak at the event, sharing their respective powerful and moving journeys.
Christina was paralysed from the chest down after a motorbike accident in 2018. Despite her intense and arduous rehabilitation, Christina not only recently returned to work but also got back on the motorbike. She has been dealt a cruel blow but is driven to inspire others by sharing the challenges of her journey.
Dr Kehinde is a local General Practitioner who will tell her story of how she balances multiple identities and what she has overcome to be a successful woman.
A medical professional, mother, migrant, African and rural woman – Dr Kehinde is a living example of how far hard work and dedication can take you.
Greater Shepparton City Councillor and Charter Champion, Seema Abdullah, said she is excited about the theme of the upcoming International Women’s Day event.
“We are extremely lucky to have such inspiring women here in Greater Shepparton,” Cr Abdullah said.
“These women continually inspire others to achieve great things every day.
“Our region is diverse, and the talents, backgrounds and stories of local women are equally diverse.
“I encourage members of the Greater Shepparton community to click the link, sign up for a free ticket and attend this wonderful event.”
The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee is a community advisory committee of the Greater Shepparton City Council, and is part of a broader network of Local Government Area advisory committees across the state that are guided and informed by the Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter.
The Committee is made up of volunteers who, with Council’s support, aim to increase women’s participation in key decision making forums in the community and in democratic governance.
The Committee supports three main principles: Gender Equity, Diversity, and Active Citizenship.
This event is proudly supported by La Trobe University, Primary Care Connect, GAME Traffic and Contracting, Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District and Greater Shepparton City Council.
