Greater Shepparton City Council in partnership with Vision 2020 Australia are raising awareness about the importance of eye health and vision care as part of World Sight Day.
Established by the World Health Organisation almost 20 years ago, World Sight Day is a globally recognised day that highlights the importance of vision health and good eye care.
Now is the perfect time for the community to think about their sight with Thursday 10 October marking World Sight Day for 2019.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Community Kaye Thomson said to bring awareness of eye health in the community, Council would hold a photography competition.
“We have spectacular scenery throughout our region and it would truly be a shame for some of our residents and locals to miss these sights due to poor eye health care,” Ms Thomson said.
“We’re asking the community to send through images of what is important to them, that they wouldn’t want to miss the joy of seeing ever again. By doing so we hope this encourages members of our community to have regular health checks and keep their vision strong.”
Vision Initiative Program Manager Janine Sherrad said vision loss could be preventable.
“Around 90 per cent of blindness and vision loss is preventable or treatable if detected early,” Ms Sherrad said.
“This World Sight Day, Vision Initiative is encouraging all Victorians to put their vision first and have an eye test.”
To participate in the My Favourite Sight competition post a photo of your favourite view, it could be a garden, food, sport, pet or family member, post it to social media with the #MyFavouriteSight and make sure its public.
Entries will go into the draw to win a $250.00 Coles Myer gift card. The best 20 images will be displayed in a public exhibition at Riverlinks Eastbank foyer.
The competition closes Sunday 13 October 2019 and the exhibition will open at Riverlinks Eastbank on Friday 18 October.
