7 Green lid bin tips for the hot weather

With the weather expected to reach 40 degrees this week the contents of your green lid bin or kitchen caddy may emit more odours than usual due to the hotter weather.

Greater Shepparton Councillor Jenny Houlihan suggests a few quick and easy ways to deal with the odours in the warmer weather.

  1. Move your bins to a shady and well ventilated area.
  2. Layer your food waste with lawn clippings or dry leaves.
  3. Don’t overfill your bin, the green lid must be able to close.
  4. Place a paper towel in the bottom of your purple compostable bag to absorb any liquid residue.
  5. Freeze meat, seafood and fruit scraps until the night before your bin collection.
  6. Tie up your purple compostable bag every couple of days (even if not full) and place in the green lid bin.
  7. Wash out your kitchen caddy regularly either by placing it in the dishwasher (the caddies are dishwasher safe) or use baking soda, vinegar or mild detergent and warm water.

Cr Houlihan said she has been pleased with the take up of the kitchen caddys and the green lid bin. “residents are doing a great job with their green lid bins but we need to continue this great effort and ensure we don’t contaminate the compost.”
