Green Organic contamination rates continue to drop

Green Organic waste contamination rates in Greater Shepparton have stayed well under the target in the past four months with a July contamination rate of a low 2.15 per cent.

Greater Shepparton residents have done an excellent job in sorting their waste with 2019 contamination rates being the most successful to date with only one month so far going over the target goal of less than three per cent contamination.

Manager Works and Waste Janelle Bunfield said this was an outstanding result and thanked residents for their ongoing efforts to reduce contamination and sort waste correctly.

“Thank you to all the residents for their efforts which has resulted in the steady improvement or reduction in contamination rates in the municipality. To see such consistent results throughout the entire year shows us Greater Shepparton residents are thinking carefully about which bin they are using for their waste,” Mrs Bunfield said.

“Putting organic waste in the green lid bin has many benefits, primarily protecting our environment and diverting waste from landfill which has long term benefits for us all.”

More than 700 tonnes of food and garden waste was composted last month which will ultimatly go back to the earth.

It is important residents remember the green lid bin is for organic waste only, such as lawn clippings and food scraps.

“Even though the results are good we still regularly see some  items like hard and soft plastics ending up in the green organic bins and we are looking to further reduce this level of contamination and encourage residents to carefully consider what is placed in the bin. It’s important to remember thatone contaminated bin can effect an entire truck load of green organics,” Mrs Bunfield said.
