The plan forecasts that the Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kialla region will experience major growth over the next 20 to 30 years, with the capacity to accommodate up to 17,600 new residents and requiring a significant investment in physical and social infrastructure.
The plan also predicts considerable growth in the Lower Hume corridor, with Seymour identified as a strategic location for population growth and economic development.
“The forecasts made in the Hume Regional Growth Plan highlight the urgent need for the State Government to invest in the infrastructure projects detailed in the Make Shepparton Greater campaign”, said Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan.
“Consistent with the Make Shepparton Greater campaign, the population growth predicted in the plan calls for substantial infrastructure improvements, including increased train services between Shepparton and Melbourne, upgraded health facilities and more efficient traffic routes.
“Now is the time for the State Government to invest in these infrastructure projects if the region is to achieve the plan’s vision of long term prosperity and sustainable growth”, Mayor Houlihan said.
Coordinated by Council with the support of key stakeholders, the Make Shepparton Greater campaign is lobbying both the Coalition State Government and the Opposition for a commitment to fund increased passenger rail services, redevelopment of Goulburn Valley Health, construction of the Goulburn Valley Highway Shepparton Bypass and revitalisation of the Shepparton central business district.
