It is now five years since the initial rollout of the green lid bins and kitchen caddies and residents can expect to receive their next complimentary roll of purple compostable bags from January to February.
Residents have clearly demonstrated a commitment to improved waste management including sorting and placing waste in the appropriate bin and the use of these purple bags for food scraps. With this support we have achieved great results with contamination rates continuing to drop for the green lid bin. In the past five years approximately 39,000 tonnes of garden and food waste have been diverted from landfill. Council is proud of this achievement and provides the purple bags to assist residents improve our management of waste.
Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Phil Hoare has commended residents on their continuing efforts over the past year.
“This has significantly contributed to the success of composting in our municipality. It has not only saved ratepayers’ money but it also has wonderful benefits for our environment and economy, as the composted material is predominately used on farm land to improve the health of the soil and its productivity and avoids taking up valuable landfill space,” he said.
“The purple compostable bags meet strict Australian standards and are specifically designed to break down in the composting process, so please only use these Council provided bags in your kitchen caddy and green lid bin. Keeping contamination low is important as it ensures we fully reap the benefits of the service”.
“I encourage residents to keep up the good work and help us work together to reduce waste to landfill and protect our environment.”
If you do not receive your complimentary roll of bags by the end of February please contact Council’s Customer Service Team on (03) 5832 9700.
