The Watts Working Better streetlight project is combining sustainability and creativity and inviting students to create a video and share their energy efficiency vision for their school.
The Watts Working Better Energy Efficiency in Schools Video Competition challenges students to create their own one minute video about what they would do with $500 to improve energy efficiency in their school.
Mayor Dennis Patterson said the competition was an opportunity for schools to share their energy efficiency contemplations and goals.
“We are asking students to create a one minute video about how they’d improve energy efficiency in their school and be in the running to win $500 toward actually implement their ideas,” said Mayor Dennis Patterson.
The Watts Working Better project involves the nine local councils of Benalla Rural City, Campaspe Shire Council, Greater Shepparton City Council, Mansfield Shire, Mitchell Shire, Moira Shire, Murrindindi Shire, Rural City of Wangaratta and Strathbogie Shire.
The project received $2.95 million from the Australian Government and will see more than 12,600 street lights upgraded to energy efficient Fluorescent and LED lights throughout the nine Council areas by the end of 2015. Greater Shepparton City Council has replaced 1,956 street lights to more energy efficient lights as part of the project with a remaining 1,956 in stage 2 lights to upgraded in coming months.
“Energy efficiency is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and we are asking students to help spread this message through the Watts Working Better Energy Efficiency in Schools Video Competition,” Mr Patterson said.
The Watts Working Better Energy Efficiency in Schools Video Competition is open to primary and secondary schools within participating Council areas. Schools can enter more than once. Every school will receive an entry prize, with one ‘first prize’ of a $500 gift voucher for the Enviro Shop Eco Store, enviroshop.com.au awarded in each Council area.
Entries must be received by Friday 16 October 2015 and address the question of ‘how would you improve energy efficiency in your school if it won $500?
