Greater Shepparton City Council is pleased to announce that repair works on Watt Road Bridge are now complete. The bridge was opened to traffic on schedule last Friday 10 December.
The repairs to the 140 year old trestle bridge took four months to complete. The upgrade will allow it to carry up to ten tonnes and will ensure it is structurally sound for the next ten years.
While some repairs are visible to motorists such as the new guard rails, height barriers and new decking planks where needed, much of the works occurred on the underside and below the bridge.
A significant component of the works were the refurbishment of the piers, which had deteriorated due to age. The piles at each pier were wrapped and grouted to strengthen the structure. Some piles were partially underwater and these repairs were made with the assistance of divers. The addition of walers and cross-bracing further strengthened the piers.
The upgrade works were jointly funded under the Federal Governments Bridges Renewal Program and Council’s bridge renewals budget.
Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Director Infrastructure, Tim Zak said simply replacing the bridge is not a straight-forward task.
“The historic bridge is included in the Heritage Overlay of the Greater Shepparton Planning Scheme and is not able to be demolished.
“We have performed necessary repairs to extend the life of the bridge while we investigate options for a potential replacement in the future,” he said.
Council would like to thank local residents and road users for their patience during the bridge closure, which allowed these important safety upgrades to be completed.
