Purple spotlight on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Next week, Thursday 15 June will mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the main day where the world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on the elderly.

In commemoration of the day, Greater Shepparton City Council will be painting the night purple by lighting up the Mooroopna Water Tower and the big gum tree in Monash Park. The purple lights on this day are to raise awareness of elder abuse and generate conversations on ways to challenge such abuse and neglect.

Greater Shepparton City Council Acting Director Community Tony Tranter noted Council will also be running a number of activities with the Planned Activity Groups.

“This day is a time to celebrate and value the contributions and achievements of the elders in our communities. Council aims to educate and promote respect for everyone, endeavouring to help prevent elder abuse,” said Mr Tranter.
