Maternal and Child Health

Soon after your baby is born, the hospital or midwife will contact Council's Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Service.

An MCH nurse will contact you and arrange a time to visit you and your baby at home. After your home visit, regular follow-up appointments will be made for you to visit one of Council's MCH centres (usually the centre closest to where you live).

The MCH Service is a free service and available to all families with children aged 0 to 6. The service aims to promote the health and wellbeing of children and provide information and support for:

  • Breastfeeding
  • Child health and development
  • Maternal health and wellbeing, including postnatal depression
  • Parent/child relationships
  • Family planning
  • Nutrition
  • Immunisation
  • Parenting support and new parents groups
  • Childhood illnesses

On occasions the local MCH nurse may refer families who are experiencing difficulties to the Enhanced Maternal and Child Health Service. This is also a free service.

The Greater Shepparton MCH central number is 03 5832 9312. This number is used to make appointments, general enquiries and to speak to an MCH nurse.

An after hours MCH advice and support line is also available and can be contacted on 132 229.
